Harmonium’s Baker Child Care Program offers creative and educational yet affordable child care to families in Southeast San Diego. Recently, Harmonium coordinated and executed seven “Serve-a-thon” projects to re-vamp and rejuvenate various parts of their child care facilities, including the “Baby Bloomer Garden and Playground” where Backyard X-Scapes’ own bamboo fencing is now proudly on display.
Backyard X-Scapes happily donated 20 rolls of our natural, black and mahogany rolled bamboo fencing to be used as a decorative accent against the previously harsh chain-link fence that bordered the playground. After it’s make-over, the Baby Bloomer Playground is now used every day as an integral part of Harmonium’s mission to bring wellness and healthy habits to our community’s children.
In addition to the Baby Bloomer Playground, Backyard X-Scapes bamboo fencing made the short trip to Balboa Elementary school to beautiful an additional Infant/Toddler Garden Area. Backyard X-Scapes was able to donate so much bamboo fencing that two playgrounds in our community are now viable and visually appealing.
Volunteer San Diego staged is annual volunteer weekend throughout San Diego on October 8 and 9th. This year’s projects included seven Harmonium Serve-a-thon projects, utilizing 170 volunteers from throughout San Diego county. In addition to enhancing the Baby Bloomer Playground, volunteers created a Krafty Kitchen Counter to show children organic vegetable farming techniques, resuscitated a dilapidated garden area to be used for planting and storytelling at the Balboa Early Childhood Program site and brought to life other outdoor areas that will be enjoyed by children for years to come.
Backyard X-Scapes is glad to have helped make a difference in the community in which we operate. We fully support Harmonium’s core values of respect, self-sufficiency, creativity and continuous improvement and hope that our donation helps Harmonium further their efforts to promote the physical, mental and emotional well-being children and adults in our community.
Backyard Xscapes participated in the 50th annual Landscape Expo held in Long Beach this past October 6-7. The Expo included exhibits from over 200 vendors displaying products and providing help and ideas to private and corporate consumers wishing to “design, build or maintain” their respective landscapes.
Many vendors held raffles and contests to create interest and discussion around various new products and eco-friendly landscaping ideas. Backyard Xscapes gave away an environmentally friendly bamboo Tiki Bar valued at $500 to one lucky winner in addition to providing our customary top-notch customer service and educational materials.
This year’s expo expanded by 50% over last year and showcased 45 industry specific seminars where attendees could earn PAPA, CLT CLP, ISA and SPLD credits. Hour-long talks were giving on topics ranging from Irrigation and Landscape Design to Tree Care and Sustainability. The Expo continued into the night as a panel led a discussion about the future of the landscaping industry for landscape contractors, superintendents, architects and design professionals in attendance at a pool side after party.
Backyard Xscapes thoroughly enjoyed interacting with the crowd at the Long Beach Convention Center as well as with other industry professionals. Congratulations to Fern Nuerro for winning herself a brand new Tiki Bar. We hope it transforms your backyard xscape into a private paradise you will enjoy for years to come.
Art Around Adams has been a San Diego tradition since 2004 in the North Park and Kensington communities. Every year local businesses turn their offices and corporate space into public art exhibition venues, complete with musical entertainment and street performers. The family-friendly event provides exposure to local artists and publicity for local business in addition to being a fun and safe celebration of the arts.
This past June 3, Backyard X-Scapes helped sponsor the event and set up a venue to showcase the very latest in bamboo furniture and eco-friendly landscaping options. We dispensed both product information and beverages.
Everyone was decked out in their Backyard X-Scapes gear and had a great time educating the public about all the environmentally friendly bamboo options. The event drew 75 local businesses and countless local artists, musicians and performers.
The event was conceptualized to showcase local art in business storefronts and has grown from a limited budget and an audience of about 300 visitors to a thriving 1.6 mile long stretch chalked full of businesses and sponsors looking to create art awareness and appreciation.
Backyard X-Scapes thoroughly enjoyed the live music and art exhibitions. The six hour event was filled with arts and entertainment, small business flair and countless local residents looking to spend a day in the sun appreciating San Diego’s talent.
Each year after the Earth Day fair, San Diego Earthworks holds an awards ceremony recognizing individuals who have made a greener difference in the community, which is then followed by a dinner and silent auction. Backyard X-Scapes was invited to attend the festivities and to donate an eco-friendly product for the auction.
Our all-natural bamboo furniture added a hint of the tropics to the décor and was admired both for its aesthetic appeal and functionality while being environmentally-friendly. We’re incredibly proud that our bamboo furniture set was able to raise money for a great cause, while providing attending patrons with a comfortable place to sit and enjoy.
In keeping with the motif, the event was completely waste -free. All the drink containers and serving devices were 100% biodegradable and all food waste were separated into a bin for land fertilizer, rather than being sent to the landfill.
In addition to enjoying great food, good times and some friendly auction competitiveness, we got to see and experience all of the other wonderful green ideas sprouting up in the San Diego area. One great auction item was for a business membership to the Green Chamber of Commerce, a business network “supporting the development of sustainable business practices, and advocating for a green public policy.” With the recent environmental devastation surrounding the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, we also believe that now more than ever, businesses need to be more aware of the environmental impact we make, and in which ways we can help each other to be more kind to the planet.
April 22, 2010 marked the 40th annual Earth Day. Established in 1970, Earth Day was created to spread awareness about the environment and further educate the public about eco-friendly alternatives and lifestyles. The San Diego EarthFair is our local tribute to the environment. Over 70,000 people packed into Balboa Park on Sunday April 18th to inspire local conservation efforts. Vendors and exhibitors displayed everything from organically grown and naturally-made crops and products to alternative energy vehicles. Information on traditional conservation efforts was readily available as well as pet adoption services, eco-tourism opportunities and organic gardening resources.
As bamboo is the latest in eco-friendly flooring, fencing and decorating, Backyard X-Scapes fit in perfectly with the environmentally-conscious crowd. Our display touted the finest in tiki-themed décor, including a full-scale bamboo bar with matching tiki barstools, masks and torches.
Our decorative signage was big hit, especially among the vacation-seeking weekenders.
We showed guests and tourists the benefits of eco-conscious decorating and inspired numerous tiki themed backyards with the incredible variety of fencing, bordering, lighting and accents available.
The event was a huge success for everyone involved. We were allowed the pleasure of connecting with our community through a common goal: protecting the environment we all share. It was fantastic to see the amount of young people in attendance – all eager to learn about and participate in environmental conservation.
All in all, EarthFair 2010 at Balboa Park was a huge success. Adults and children of all ages came together a learned not only why but how to keep the planet beautiful. Hopefully, the event, coupled with every vendor and exhibitors efforts to create an eco-aware community will make San Diego a greener, cleaner and healthier place for all of us.
Although temperatures may be warming and it may feel like summer’s upon us, the official day of summer isn’t until June 21st, which gives you just enough time to give your backyard that new look. Outdoor Rooms is a Better Homes and Gardens special interest publication and their theme for this months magazine is “Take a Vacation in Your Own Backyard.” Throughout this issue, they are giving readers a “Passport to Style” through different types of backyards and since Backyard X-Scapes is all about helping you to “Create Your Great Escape,” they featured many of our products.
Jane Austin McKeon (Outdoor Rooms Editor) describes the essence of summer entertaining and backyard enjoyment perfectly.
““My favorite time of year to entertain is summer. A barefoot and blue jeans sort of girl, I would much rather wave the neighbors over for a spur-of-the-moment glass of wine on the front porch or serve a picnic-style supper for my family on the deck than put a lot of planning and primping into a fancy dining room affair. Backyards cater to impromptu entertaining.”
Tropical flare and that “Polynesian Pop” never goes out of style. Outdoor rooms showed that with some colorful elements, playful arrangements and various lively foliage, you can create a vibrant island getaway right in your backyard. Some of the products used included Tiki Signs, Bamboo Signs, an African Thatch umbrella kit, a stainless steel BBQ island, tiki statues, and a pool table for easy entertaining.
“Rebuilding Together San diego” is an organization we’ve been working recently in promoting the idea of “neighbors helping neighbors.” We find it incredibly important to give back to the communities, especially ones in which we are so much a part of. Rebuilding Together San Diego approached us with a wonderful idea and mission, that we were honored to be able to be a part of:
” In partnership with volunteers, donors and organizations, Rebuilding Together San Diego revitalizes homes and neighborhoods for low-income homeowners and communities in need, especially the elderly, disabled and families, helping them to live in warmth, safety and independence.”
In joining with Rebuilding Together San Diego, we were able to liven backyards with a fresh new look for spring. Here are some of projects.
This bounteous garden look was created using black bamboo fencing, spare wooden crates/boxes or drawers, a palm tree, extra plants and pumpkins. What’s useful is that the boxes are not only decorative but are also functional as creative planters.
Replacing an older fence or wall can be costly so for a charming and charismatic look, our natural 4ft fence is paired with our mahogany 4 ft fence which works with the gate and borders the tall trees.
To give a walk way to a home more character, our rock bench was paired with matching path stones.

You can see everyone we’ve been working with and the green events we’ve been involved in. You can also read about what some of our customers have to say about us.
Don’t forget that today is the last day to enter the raffle on the homepage to win $200 in home and garden products!
Last week’s CLCA landscape industry trade show was a hit and we wanted to extend our thanks to everyone for stopping by our booth to say hi and entering in our Tiki Bar Contest. Congratulations to T. Mahlman from LCIS Inc. on winning, we hope your Tiki Bar has made a tropical paradise out of your home or backyard.
It was spectacular how the Los Angeles convention center was literally transformed by all the exhibits, lush greenery, towering trees and serene water gardens. In addition to the colorful visuals, the CLCA show offered informative demonstrations on the specifics to tree trimming, building a wall, water conservation and more. We enjoyed networking and meeting people from different industries and the wealth of knowledge they had to offer when it came to home improvement and landscaping.
We decorated our booth with bamboo fencing, artificial grass, pottery, a tiki bar and 8 ft banners displaying our products and services. Our TV which had rotating images of projects in which our products were used, was a big hit and sparked a lot of interesting “how to” questions.
The biggest hit was our Tiki Bar contest! Everyone dropped their business cards into a jar and at 2pm on Thursday the cards were transferred to a large box to be efficiently shuffled, then a name was drawn.
Over the two day show, they offered 3 demonstrations that explained the technical aspects that go into tree trimming.
Our booth became the center of a lot of attention and questions especially in regards to our bamboo fencing, pottery and Tiki Bar.
